About Florian

I am a self-taught painter from Munich with a scientific background in Computational Evolutionary Biology.

I began painting during my postdoctoral work in the South of France, inspired by standing in the landscapes Vincent van Gogh had observed and painted more than a century earlier. Studying his work and letters became an important part of my development and introduced me to a way of learning that still shapes my practice: close observation, testing ideas through studies, and perseverance. My scientific training in breaking complex problems into meaningful parts naturally influences this analytical and experimental approach.

Painting allows me to explore and express emotions that remain hidden in scientific work. I am particularly interested in how structure, color, gesture, and paint handling can create these effects, and how restraint can suggest more than is explicitly shown.

Experimenting with different styles and techniques is an important part of this exploration. Rather than following a fixed approach, I try to learn from different artistic traditions and gradually develop a visual language of my own.​
